International hydrogen strategies in comparison
A variety of countries around the world are currently working at full speed to establish a hydrogen economy. The primary goal given is climate protection, but economic considerations are also being pursued. H2-Compass offers an overview of international hydrogen strategies in this analysis.
Most of the countries analysed agree that the hydrogen of the future should no longer be produced with fossil fuels. All countries rely on the use of water electrolysis and assign a central role to renewable electricity. However, countries expect to need a relatively long transition phase for the changeover to fully renewable electricity.
Hydrogen production based on fossil fuels with carbon capture is considered as a transition technology. It is likely that European countries will soon re-evaluate this option in the light of Russia’s war on Ukraine – all the strategies evaluated were written before the outbreak of the war.
