Country strategies analysis

International hydrogen strategies in comparison

19 December 2022

As part of the H2-Compass project, we have so far evaluated and compared the hydrogen strategies of 22 countries and regions. We present our analysis and show, among other things, which countries aim to position themselves as export nations.

International hydrogen strategies in comparison

A variety of countries around the world are currently working at full speed to establish a hydrogen economy. The primary goal given is climate protection, but economic considerations are also being pursued. H2-Compass offers an overview of international hydrogen strategies in this analysis.

Most of the countries analysed agree that the hydrogen of the future should no longer be produced with fossil fuels. All countries rely on the use of water electrolysis and assign a central role to renewable electricity. However, countries expect to need a relatively long transition phase for the changeover to fully renewable electricity.

Hydrogen production based on fossil fuels with carbon capture is considered as a transition technology. It is likely that European countries will soon re-evaluate this option in the light of Russia’s war on Ukraine – all the strategies evaluated were written before the outbreak of the war.

Which countries see themselves as exporters of hydrogen and derivatives? Which areas of application are the focus of the individual strategies? Are there intentions to establish and expand the necessary infrastructure and/or international collaboration? To what extent is the strengthening of various R&D activities addressed? Find the answers in the H2-Compass country analysis.
