Hydrogen

A key element in the net-zero transition

Hydrogen, or H₂, is seen as a key element in the net-zero transition. Its use is an essential step towards a decarbonised economy, especially for the steel and chemical industries, in mechanical engineering, for sector coupling or as part of sustainable transport. Hydrogen demand can grow only in one direction: up!

But how exactly can Germany make the transition from a fossil-based to a sustainable energy supply with hydrogen as an energy carrier? How can hydrogen, which is still scarce today, be produced, imported, transported and utilised? Answering these questions is an enormous task, requiring a complete reworking of the energy supply and societal-wide buy-in.

The German government has already defined the framework:

  1. In 2020, the National Hydrogen Strategy was published.
  2. The National Hydrogen Council accompanies and advises the Committee of State Secretaries and prepares statements and position papers.
  3. H2-Compass by acatech and DECHEMA is developing courses of action that will lay the foundation for a political hydrogen roadmap with a focus an innovation and research.
